member spotlight

It’s September folks, and that means we’re going to feature some of our members and their awesome businesses here at Fellow!

Did you know this is a free quarterly event for Fellow members? We offer free headshots in the space, courtesy of Treatment, and a free feature because we’re a small, locally owned business too; we know how important local support is and to be honest, it’s easy to support such awesome folks!

Meet Jenny Davis

Business Name / Profession: Lilac City Literary/Writing Consultancy

Explain your role in this business / profession.: Owner/Writer

What do you enjoy about what you do?: I love helping people make meaning through writing. LCL's writing and editing services lend themselves to everything from copywriting for the web to proofreading resumes to developmental editing of novels, which means I get to work with a big range of people on a big range of projects, and that means every day is interesting!

How long have you been a member at Fellow and why do you choose to be a part of this community?: Post-pandemic, I've only been back a month, but I used to be a member, back in the day, for about a year. The energy of the Fellow space is electric, and the people are super awesome. Plus, the coffee is spectacular!!

Do you have any professional advice, life advice, or something you'd like to fill our followers in on? This can be anything!: Writing is a lot like life: much of the magic happens in the specifics!

Meet NICK Kiourkas

Business Name / Profession: Selectemp

Explain your role in this business / profession.: Branch Manager

What do you enjoy about what you do?: Helping people find a rewarding and enjoyable career while helping local companies achieve a balanced workforce.

How long have you been a member at Fellow and why do you choose to be a part of this community?: New to Fellow in July 2021

Do you have any professional advice, life advice, or something you'd like to fill our followers in on? This can be anything!: Work should be something you enjoy and that brings you a sense of accomplishment.

Meet KATHLYN KINNEY

Business Name / Profession: Biomethane, LLC

Explain your role in this business / profession.: I show wastewater plants how to profit by generating renewable natural gas from sewage.

What do you enjoy about what you do?: I get to be in the center of an exploding (explosive?) industry and focus it in on the local region. It's so niche that hardly anyone knows what I'm talking about most of the time, but once people get the concept of making renewable fuel from methane emissions, it's "why aren't we doing this everywhere?" And with folks from Avista and King County who are already on board, it's fun to, say, offer ways to significantly boost renewable gas production by playing around with microbiology. There's a lot of magic in taking cutting-edge know-how, and translating that to action on a business-decision level in Spokane and around the state.

How long have you been a member at Fellow and why do you choose to be a part of this community?: Since April 2021 - I love the vibe and the couches! Seriously, though. The plants and humans are also all right. ;)

Do you have any professional advice, life advice, or something you'd like to fill our followers in on? This can be anything!: A friend asked me recently, "should I just *create* myself a job position doing X?" The answer is unequivocally yes. When you have a vision you're inspired enough about that you're willing to make yourself up a job description and somehow figure out how to earn your salary doing that thing (something which may take 3 years instead of the 6 months I envisioned 3 years ago), the world probably needs it.

MEET JACQUELYN BARNES

Business Name / Profession: Treatment / Creative Director

Explain your role in this business / profession.: I help lead the sales and creative process across a range of media types, as well as produce designed and/or written deliverables.

What do you enjoy about what you do?: I love learning about and getting to know the wide variety of businesses and community organizations that seek out our services. Every project is different, so it's always fresh. I also prefer to work as part of a team, which we do constantly.

How long have you been a member at Fellow and why do you choose to be a part of this community?: Treatment joined Fellow in the very beginning. I joined Treatment in 2017.

Do you have any professional advice, life advice, or something you'd like to fill our followers in on? This can be anything!: I'm constantly amazed at how fluid our career paths can be. They are so shaped by our unique interests and relationships over time. If your industry isn't a perfect fit, you don't need to start over — just make it your own, make new connections, keep pressing in.
